What Is a Secure Mental Health Ambulance?

Secure ambulances are purpose-built vehicles featuring containment areas to safely transport patients requiring secure care. While they resemble standard NHS ambulances externally, they are specifically designed to minimise risk during conveyance. Operated by highly trained crews skilled in de-escalation and positive behaviour support, these teams prioritise non-restrictive practice. Secure interventions—such as the use of cells, mechanical, or chemical restraint—are applied strictly under written authorization from the Ministry of Justice or a Registered Mental Health Professional, ensuring lawful and ethical delivery.
